Local Region

Only 2 km away from Margon is the larger village of Roujan which has a variety of shops or in the other direction Pouzolles is about the same distance away. Both these villages boast wonderful bakeries, butchers and general stores. They also have regular market days on a rotational basis.

Just 10 minutes drive is the historic town of Pézenas, with its huge lively weekly market (Saturdays), two large supermarkets, plus many other shops and the ubiquitous internet café. Pézenas is a fascinating town to wander around. Be sure to visit the historic centre which is full of quality art and craft shops, galleries, beautiful buildings, restaurants and cafes.

In the other direction, only 20 minutes drive away, is Béziers, through which the Canal du Midi flows, where you can visit the famous Nine Locks. A fascinating town with a strong Spanish flavour, there are lots of restaurants and a great atmosphere in this bustling town, especially during the summer when the town holds the annual Féria, which is well-worth a visit. The views from the Cathedral on the top of the hill are spectacular and give a wonderful view over the valley.

Margon is less than four hours north of Barcelona, just over an hour from Carcassonne and an hour from Montpellier. You'll find yourself brilliantly placed amongst wineries, pretty villages and easy access to fascinating and historical sites - Canal du Midi, Abbaye de Valmagne, Nîmes, Arles, Pont du Gard and the Millau Viaduct which must be seen to be believed!

Vineyards

For wine lovers, Margon is situated in the terroir of the Côtes de Thongue including the Domaine Comte de Margon on your very doorstep (the winery of Château Margon). With four or five wineries within walking distance of the village and more than 50 others in the local area (within 15 minutes drive) it is a fabulous region for exploring vineyards and tasting wines. Further afield there are many famous vineyards including those of St. Chinian, the Minervois, Pic-St-Loup, and Aniane.

Tour de France

For Tour de France enthusiasts Margon places you right near the action. In 2007, the Tour went through Pézenas, and in 2008 it came within two kilometres of Margon passing by Pouzolles and right through Roujan in Stage 13 (Narbonne to Nime) - a very exciting time for locals and visitors alike.

If you are interested in cycling this is a great area for exploring on two wheels - the perfect terrain for bikes. Bikes can be hired from the bicycle shop in Pézenas (10 minutes drive away).
